Is Calcium Silicate Insulation Asbestos-Free?
Yes. Mingfa calcium silicate insulation is 100% asbestos-free. No asbestos has ever been used in Mingfa products since the company was founded in 1991. This is one of the most common questions we receive, particularly from buyers in regions with strict occupational health and safety regulations.
A Brief History: Why the Question Comes Up
Historically, some calcium silicate insulation products manufactured before the 1980s contained asbestos fibers as mechanical reinforcement. Asbestos was banned from insulation manufacturing in most countries by the 1990s. However, the historical association means that importers and specifiers still ask for confirmation. Today, all reputable calcium silicate insulation manufacturers use synthetic fiber reinforcement.
What Mingfa Uses Instead of Asbestos
Mingfa products are reinforced with two types of synthetic fibers:
- Alkali-resistant (AR) glass fibers: These provide tensile strength and handle the alkaline environment of the calcium silicate matrix (pH 10-12 during curing). AR glass fibers contain zirconia (ZrO&sub2;) which prevents degradation in alkaline conditions.
- Carbon fibers: Used in high-temperature and high-strength grades for additional reinforcement at elevated temperatures.
Testing and Certification
Mingfa products are tested for asbestos content per ISO 22262-1 (Air quality -- Bulk materials -- Part 1: Sampling and qualitative determination of asbestos in commercial bulk materials). The detection limit is below 0.1%. Each production batch is accompanied by a declaration of asbestos-free status in the batch certificate of analysis. Third-party testing reports are available to customers upon request.
Why Asbestos-Free Matters
Beyond the obvious health and regulatory compliance reasons, asbestos-free status is a prerequisite for CE marking under the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and for compliance with REACH and similar chemical safety regulations in most developed markets. If you are importing calcium silicate insulation into the EU, North America, Australia, or the Middle East, asbestos-free certification is a mandatory documentation requirement for customs clearance.
