Calcium Silicate Factory & Installation — Videos & Technical Demonstrations

Production processes, quality control testing, and installation demonstrations from Mingfa's calcium silicate manufacturing facility in Laizhou, Shandong, China.

Factory Production Overview

The calcium silicate manufacturing process at Mingfa's Laizhou facility follows a controlled multi-stage production line. Each stage is monitored for quality consistency, from raw material preparation through final packaging. The following cards document each process step with video slots available for qualified partners.

1. Raw Material Preparation

Lime (calcium oxide) and silica (silicon dioxide) are precisely weighed and mixed into an aqueous slurry. The slurry formulation ratio determines final product density (170-250 kg/m³) and mechanical properties. Raw materials are sourced from qualified suppliers and undergo inbound quality inspection before entering production.

2. Autoclave Curing

The formed slurry is cast into molds and transferred to high-pressure autoclaves for hydrothermal curing. Under saturated steam at 190-220°C, the lime-silica reaction forms tobermorite (calcium silicate hydrate) crystals, the primary binding phase that gives the material its strength and thermal properties. Curing cycles are precisely controlled for consistent crystalline structure.

3. Drying & Cutting/Finishing

After autoclave curing, the formed blocks and pipe sections enter controlled drying chambers to reduce residual moisture to specification levels. Dried products are then precision-cut to dimensional tolerances (length, width, thickness, and for pipe sections, inner/outer diameter). Surface finishing removes any roughness, and beveled edges are applied where specified.

4. Quality Inspection

Each production batch undergoes in-line quality inspection before release. Dimensional checks, visual inspection for surface defects, density spot-checks, and moisture content verification are performed. Non-conforming product is segregated and documented per ISO 9001 procedures. Batch traceability is maintained from raw material lot through finished product serial number.

5. Packaging & Warehouse

Finished calcium silicate products are wrapped in protective polyethylene film, labeled with product grade, dimensions, batch number, and production date. Products are palletized and stretch-wrapped for stability during transport. Warehouse storage is in covered, dry conditions to prevent moisture absorption before shipment. Export orders receive additional strapping and container loading supervision.

Product Testing & QC

Mingfa operates an in-house quality control laboratory equipped for routine and specialized testing of calcium silicate insulation. Third-party verification from accredited laboratories (SGS, CTI) supplements internal QC data. Each test method is described below with video demonstration slots for qualified viewers.

Density Measurement (ASTM C303)

Bulk density of calcium silicate insulation is determined per ASTM C303 standard test method. Specimens are oven-dried to constant mass and measured for physical dimensions. Density is calculated as mass per unit volume (kg/m³). Typical Mingfa product densities range from 170 kg/m³ to 250 kg/m³ depending on grade. Density directly influences thermal conductivity and compressive strength.

Thermal Conductivity Testing

Thermal conductivity is the defining performance characteristic of calcium silicate insulation. Two methods are employed: the hot wire method (transient line source technique per ISO 8894) for rapid QC screening, and the guarded hot plate method (steady-state per ASTM C518 / ISO 8301) for certified third-party test reports. Measurements are taken at multiple mean temperatures (commonly 100°C, 200°C, 300°C, 400°C) to establish the thermal conductivity curve.

Compressive Strength (ASTM C165)

Compressive strength testing per ASTM C165 determines the load-bearing capacity of calcium silicate insulation. A specimen of known cross-sectional area is compressed at a controlled rate until failure or a specified deformation. Compressive strength at 5% and 10% deformation is recorded. Typical Mingfa product values exceed 0.5 MPa for standard grades and 1.0 MPa for high-density grades.

Linear Shrinkage (ASTM C356)

Linear shrinkage testing per ASTM C356 measures dimensional stability at elevated temperature. Precisely measured specimens are heated in a muffle furnace to the product's rated maximum service temperature (650°C, 1000°C, or 1100°C depending on grade) for 24 hours. Post-exposure dimensional change is measured. Mingfa products consistently demonstrate linear shrinkage below 2.0% at rated temperature, well within ASTM C533 limits.

Moisture Content Determination

Residual moisture content is measured by oven-drying representative specimens at 105°C to constant mass and calculating the percentage mass loss. Low moisture content is critical for CUI (corrosion under insulation) resistance and for maintaining thermal performance in service. Mingfa products are dried to moisture content below specification limits before release.

In-House QC Lab Capabilities: Mingfa's quality control laboratory is equipped for density, thermal conductivity (hot wire), compressive strength, linear shrinkage, moisture content, and dimensional inspection. Third-party accredited laboratories (SGS, CTI) are engaged for formal test certificates, EN 13501-1 fire classification, and project-specific compliance documentation.

Installation Demonstrations

Proper installation is essential to achieving the specified thermal performance and service life of calcium silicate insulation. The following demonstration areas cover key installation techniques. Installation training videos are available for contractor onboarding upon request.

Pipe Insulation Installation

Calcium silicate pipe insulation is supplied as half-shell sections (cylindrical segments) matched to standard pipe outer diameters. Installation involves fitting the half-shells around the pipe, securing with galvanized steel banding or stainless steel wire at specified intervals, and staggering longitudinal joints between layers for multi-layer systems. Cutting and mitering techniques for elbows, tees, valves, and flanges are demonstrated.

Board Cutting & Installation Techniques

Calcium silicate boards are cut to size using carbide-tipped saw blades or specialized insulation cutting tools. Boards are installed in a staggered joint pattern to minimize thermal bridging. For curved surfaces (tanks, vessels, large-diameter ducts), boards can be cut into narrower segments to approximate the curvature. Attachment methods include welding pins with speed clips, banding, and adhesive bonding depending on the substrate and service temperature.

Joint Treatment & Sealing

Proper joint treatment prevents thermal leakage and moisture ingress. Butt joints between adjacent insulation sections should be tight-fitting. For multi-layer systems, joints of each layer must be staggered by at least 150mm. Joint sealant compatible with the service temperature should be applied where specified. Outer jacketing (aluminum, stainless steel, or PVC) provides weatherproofing and mechanical protection for outdoor and washdown environments.

Multi-Layer Insulation Systems

For high-temperature applications or where enhanced thermal performance is required, calcium silicate insulation is installed in multiple layers with staggered joints. Typical multi-layer configurations include calcium silicate inner layer (for high-temperature resistance) combined with mineral wool, perlite, or cellular glass outer layers for economic optimization. Layer thickness calculations follow project-specific thermal design requirements per applicable standards.
